The United States has somehow managed to survive its disastrous first year under the reign of its incompetent, reality television, conman leader. Year two is less than certain. With a man like him behind the wheel, there are limitless things that can go wrong, and that’s presuming he doesn’t actively court trouble. It now turns out, that’s an unsafe presumption.
Axios reports that Donald Trump knows exactly how he wants to spend the coming year. He is looking for “unexpected cultural flashpoints” to exploit and rile up his base in advance of the mid-terms. The constant yammering and race-baiting that Trump engaged in over the NFL kneeling last year was apparently just the beginning, and he will be looking for similar cultural wedge issues to divide Americans and rally his electorate.
He thinks that escalating the culture war will help the GOP push back against what is expected to be a Democratic windfall in the coming mid-terms.
While he hasn’t landed on a new pet topic yet, it seems safe to assume that there will be a racial element to it, as there almost always is when it comes to Trump. He went from vilifying Mexicans, to attacking Muslims, to targeting African American football players. The only group safe from his ire is white America. Racism is a tool he wields all too comfortably.
Trump intends to find new controversies to rant about in person as well as on his infamous Twitter account. He should be tweeting less or not at all. Instead, it appears he will be tweeting even more in 2018. Reportedly, he is more eager to stir up scandals than actually govern, which is hardly surprising given his well-demonstrated lack of attention and his general disinterest in the hard work and quotidian grind that it takes to be an effective president.
Axios adds that Trump is likely to get even more radical in his rhetoric this year, pumping up his nationalist talking points. In other words, he’s going to continue to increase the divides that he’s opened up in America in the hopes of securing a few more Republican seats during the mid-terms. Rather than trying to bring Americans together, as a president is supposed to, he’s going to play to his voters’ worst instincts.
America needs to get rid of Donald J. Trump as soon as possible so that it can begin the long process of healing the societal wounds this administration has inflicted.
