Today, former Vice President Joe Biden admitted what many Americans are coming to realize with a growing sense of anger: President Donald Trump may be compromised by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The possibility has come to seem more and more likely in recent weeks. Trump and his Republican enablers have launched increasingly desperate attacks on the FBI to undermine it and discredit special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia to influence the 2016 election.
If Trump weren’t guilty, it wouldn’t make sense for him to work so hard to derail the Mueller investigation. If he were innocent, he could simply allow the probe to continue freely until it eventually exonerated him. Instead, he digs his heels in more and more, crying “fake news” with every unflattering revelation.
MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell asked Biden about Trump’s behavior, specifically his failure to adequately confront Putin or take steps to prevent more Russian meddling in the 2016 mid-term elections.
“Look. You know, I want to give every American, including the president, the benefit of the doubt. But I can’t fathom any reason other than he is concerned of what Putin might say or do, or what information he may or may not have,” Biden replied.
While Biden is predictably diplomatic about the topic, even the faintest implication that he — someone who was one of the most powerful men in the world for eight — suspects Trump might be compromised is deeply unnerving. Biden added that America must do something to stop Russia’s future efforts to damage and erode our democracy.
