Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has been fighting a battle for his life as he undergoes treatment for a glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive form of brain tumor. The treatment hasn’t stopped the Senator from working on a new memoir that promises a “no-holds-barred” review of the Trump administration, according to a report on The Hill today.
Titled The Restless Wave, Senator McCain’s book will cover the period from McCain’s 2008 presidential bid against Barack Obama, including the choice of then Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate, to the present.
The publicity materials from the book’s publisher Simon & Schuster call it “candid, pragmatic and always fascinating,” adding that “John McCain holds nothing back in his latest memoir.”
While McCain’s recollections of his run for president and his time in the Senate during the administration of President Obama will surely offer insight into those less turbulent times, it is McCain’s take on the 2016 election and its outcome that promises to garner the most interest from readers attuned to the current political moment.
Simon & Schuster say that the Arizona Senator will “share his experiences during the divisive 2016 election and his no-holds-barred opinions on the current developments coming out of Washington.”
Given the history between the conservative Senator and the self-described “stable genius” in the White House, Mccain’s take is likely to be pointed and scabrous.
From the moment that Trump denigrated the former Vietnamese prisoner of war from the stage on the campaign trail by saying “I like people who weren’t captured,” McCain has been one of the few senior Republican leaders willing to confront the president over his departures from the political norm.
McCain earned a measure of payback to Trump last year when he cast the decisive “no” vote during the Republican attempt to dismantle Obamacare and replace it with a plan that would lead to 20 million people losing access to health care.
While McCain explained his vote as a reaction against the unilateral approach that Republican leaders took in drafting and attempting to push their disastrous health plan through Congress, his action led to a major embarrassment for Trump as his first major legislative initiative crashed and burned.
More recently Senator McCain, a notorious hawk on military matters and no friend of Vladimir Putin and Russia, called out Trump on his phone call to Putin congratulating him on his re-election victory.
“An American president does not lead the Free World by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections,” Senator McCain said.
Given the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, it will be interesting to read McCain’s take on the winner of that election.
The Restless Wave is scheduled for publication on May 22nd, so we’ll have to wait until then to see how brutal the Senator’s comments on the Trump presidency will really be.
