Rudy Giuliani just put Trump in his place with a blindsiding statement

- Agustus 24, 2018

Yesterday, Donald Trump gave a preposterous interview in which he lamented the practice by which law enforcement agents get criminals to “flip,” exchanging incriminating information on their superiors for lighter sentences or outright legal immunity. Trump’s rambling, guilt-tinged comments sounded like something a cornered mob boss would say, not the leader of the free world.

“This whole thing about ‘flipping’ they call it. I know all about ‘flipping.’ For thirty, forty years I’ve been watching ‘flippers.’ Everything’s wonderful and then they get ten years in jail and they ‘flip’ on whoever the next highest one is or as high as they can go. It almost ought to be outlawed. It’s not fair,” Trump said to Fox News.

Now, Rudy Giuliani — the slobbering Trump toady who just yesterday threatened “revolt” if Trump is impeached — has weighed in on the president’s outlandish statements in surprising fashion. The former New York City mayor has been all too happy to endorse the most moronic and racist things to spray out of Trump’s mouth in the past, but apparently attacking “flipping” is a red line for Giuliani.

“The President is not a lawyer,” Giuliani told The Daily News in a statement that seemed to be a slightly politer way of saying the president has no idea what he’s talking about.

“I don’t think he’s against the idea of cooperation. He’s against the idea of getting people to lie,” Giuliani went on to say, before adding that he’s “troubled by the comments.”

Of course, Trump’s own comments contradict Giuliani’s interpretation. The president said “flipping” should be outlawed. There is no way to honestly take the comment as anything other than an attack on the concept of cooperation.

While it’s strange that out of all the heinous things President Trump has done and said this is the one that roused Giuliani out of his obsequious fugue, it’s possible that his past work as a federal attorney— during which he used methods similar to those described by Trump to take down the New York Mafia — is what prompted him to finally stand up for law enforcement. It remains to be seen how Trump, infamous for his temper, responds to this minor rebellion in his ranks.
